Reason for origin of Ayurveda

As we know Arogya (Health) is the prime factor required to achieve anything in life. In those days the rishis found that diseases become obstacle in the way of human life.

How origin of Ayurveda took place

When diseases became obstacles for Tapa, Upavasa, Adhyayana, Brahmacharya, Vratha and Ayush of the living beings. 50 plus Maharshi who were performing sacred acts and has compassion towards these living beings gathered at the himavathaha Parshwa (foothills of Himalaya) on an auspicious day to discuss the solution to the problem.

With help of their Dhyana Chakshu, they came to know that the Indra can give solution to this problem (Combating disease). When discussion came that who are going to learn Ayurveda from Indra, Bharadwaja took initiative to go near Indra, all other Rishis agreed for that.

 

Bharadwaja went to the abode of Indra, praised and blessed him. later he conveyed his purpose of coming to him, that diseases are troubling all the creatures have manifested. Lord Indra gave the Knowledge of Ayurveda to Bharadwaja. Bharadwaja grasped the knowledge of Ayurveda, he himself enjoyed the happy life and gave the same knowledge to Rishis.

 

One among those rishis is Atreya Punarvasu, He taught his knowledge to 6 other shishyas.

    • Bhela

    • Jatukarna

    • Parashara

    • Haaritha

    • Ksharapaani

Each of these Student wrote their own books, these books were evaluated by all the scholars of those time and approved. Book written by Agnivesha is called Agnivesha Samhitha now called as Charaka Samhitha, Bhela is Bhela Samhitha etc.

 

Summary

Brahma learnt Ayurveda, taught that to Daksha Prajapati, From Daksha Prajapati – Ashwini kumara learnt Ayurveda. Ashwini kumara taught this Ayurveda to Indra, From Indra Bharadwaja learnt Ayurveda. Bharadwaja shared the knowledge to all the rishis. One of the rishis among them is Punarvasu Atreya he taught Ayurveda to 6 disciples. Among them one is Agnivesha, at present the available Charaka Samhitha is the work of Agnivesha.
